day 4

i have conned two people at work into doing the bon appetit cleanse with me - yesssss.

i can't believe i'm saying this, but i like my oatmeal for breakfast.

the barley is not the end of the world.

i am eating reasonably sized portions.

i brought a hard boiled egg to work for my afternoon snack and it sat in the work fridge all ridiculous as only a single egg just sitting in a fridge can be and it was delish.

who am i.

it will all go (slightly) to hell on wednesday when i go to trivia and eat a veggie burger with french fries, but that's okay.  my biggest pet peeve of people on diets/eating plans/whatever is when they can't go out to eat with me because their plan doesn't allow it.  or if we have to go to some weird restaurant.  i don't plan on going crazy, but dinners at restaurants are allowed.  because i say so.

it's time for resolutions and shit

i'm doing the bon appetit food lover's cleanse which i am oddly very excited about.  i mean, i've CHOSEN to do it, so i guess i should be excited.  no dairy other than yogurt (apparently dairy is hard for your digestive system to digest, so we are "giving our stomachs a break" or something), lots of whole grains, only four alcoholic drinks a week.  i am subbing in vegetarian meals when the "cleanse" tries to make me eat meat (tofu stir fries and lentil soups, among other things).  i am personally going to focus on portion size - i eat pretty healthily in general, but i also probably eat twice as much as i should for dinner on a regular basis.  so there's that.

after purchasing only alcohol at the grocery store on 12/31, i purchased only good shit on 1/1.  i bought things i've never eaten by choice before.  chia seeds!  barley!  steel cut oats!

i feel so superior to other humans.  is this what healthy people feel like on a daily basis?

i made a batch of oatmeal yesterday, and portioned it into four tupperwares for breakfast.  today i added honey and almond milk and raspberries and it was actually delicious.

i made a batch of barley yesterday, too, and i had to eat some of that at lunch and it was fine and all but not, you know, delicious in any sense of the world.

to be continued.

the thanksgiving plan

mom and dad are coming again this year (!), and i love to cook, so i'm already planning our menu.  no turkey again this year (my parents are awesome), but we will have:

--fancy mac & cheese (i learned how to make a roux as a teenager using this recipe; i make it with penne noodles, because penne > macaroni)
--grandma norma's green bean casserole (a must, obviously)
--from the smitten kitchen cookbook, a recipe for roasted eggplant with crispy chickpeas and a yogurt tahini sauce (i haven't tried this recipe before but it looks awesome and could be a quasi-substitute for meat)
--smitten kitchen's kale and caramelized onion stuffing (which both my parents - independent of one another - asked if we could add mushrooms to, because in my family mushrooms are king.  we will be adding mushrooms.  this is another recipe i haven't tried yet but am excited to!)
--brussels sprouts of some sort, perhaps the pioneer woman recipe i've used before and love
--pumpkin pie of some sort, per mom's request (maybe another pioneer woman recipe that becky made one year - it's a pumpkin cream pie, which cuts the super pumpkin-y flavor and consistency of normal pumpkin pie...the exact specifications of this is still up for debate)

basically, this thanksgiving reflects my trio of food inspirations - family + smitten kitchen + pioneer woman.  that about sums up what i eat in everyday life, too...plus a sprinkling of things i learned in cooking classes and things mark bittman taught me how to make.

for christmas, becky got me an awesome vegetarian cookbook called plenty, and this weekend i finally sat down and made a recipe from it.  this is the recipe from page 222, lentils with tomatoes and gorgonzola, with my own twists (no onions, add spinach, different kind of cheese).  the oven-dried tomatoes were an amazing compliment to the lentils, and this is definitely a recipe that i will make again!

i'm getting back into a more regular yoga practice, and with the heat of summer approaching, i am craving lighter and healthier foods.  stressful time of year (and all the bad habits that came with it) - goodbye!  hello, almost summer!

miss claire's trader joe's recommendations

the greeting cards section at trader joe's is a-mazing.  some of the cards (not 100%, but enough!) are cute or funny or pretty enough to buy - and they are simple and not cheesy - AND THEY COST $1.  i don't know when the last time you bought a $1 card was, but hallmark cards are like $4 now.  trader joe's.  buy your greeting cards there, friends.

trader joe's frozen foods section: buy the speculoos cookie butter cheesecake bites.  and thank me later. they are small enough that you don't feel guilty have a few bites of something sweet, and they are delicious enough that you will be VERY sad when they are gone.  the box says you should thaw them a bit in the fridge before eating, but i eat them straight from the fridge and they are probably just a smudge firmer than intended, but, like thin mints, these are excellent straight from the freezer.

file this under "things i didn't know about before moving to texas": hatch chiles.  they are from new mexico and they are in season right now, which means they are everywhere.  grocery stores have huge hatch chile displays (and one grocery store chain has a hatch chile festival), and today i bought hatch chile cheddar cheese (it is, as you won't be surprised to hear, DELICIOUS - a little spice, but nothing crazy).  i love tasting all these new southwest flavors!

wild rice salad

For dinner last night I made a salad that I cobbled together from other recipes:
Wild rice
Kale
Tofu
Tomatoes
Avocado
And an improvised tahini dressing (tahini, water, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper)

It was delish!

30 vegetables update

30 vegetables challenge is on a temporary hiatus while i am a little sick (i feel okay, just not great, so don't you worry too much about me).  i am eating relatively boring foods, but i did get one new veggie in:

day #16: dinner was half an amy's frozen pizza (my favorite frozen pizza brand - the crust is un-cardboard-like, which one cannot say about all frozen pizzas) with mushrooms, red peppers, and 23. artichokes on it.

also: while waiting for a doctor's appointment today, i discovered this game - 2048 - which is very fun and totally additive.  you should be playing it!  like, NOW.

30 vegetables update

day #11: i had 18. eggplant curry for dinner at an indian restaurant in austin - delicious!  it was laurie's first time eating indian food, and she loved the samosas and chicken tikka masala that she had.

day #12: lunch in the cafeteria included roasted vegetables: carrots, 19. parsnips (something i would never eat on purpose, so this was a good thing for my challenge), and 20. beets.

day #13: i made pasta with garlicky broccoli rabe for dinner, and i'd never bought 21. broccoli rabe before (it is a leafy green that is also called rapini.  do not be fooled in the grocery store when it is called rapini and you have to google whether those things are the same.).  this recipe is so good!  garlicky and a little spicy and the broccoli rabe is delish in it, though i quasi-halved the recipe and ended up with not enough broccoli rabe for the amount of pasta i made.  so, if anything, up the broccoli rabe.  this will definitely go into my recipe rotation!  love smitten kitchen recipes.

day #14: after work i had a one-woman happy hour on my patio: a beer and a little 22. seaweed salad from kroger.  ruby watched the goings-on and we both enjoyed the 70 degree weather.

it is harder and harder to eat vegetables i haven't yet had this month!  i have some brussels sprouts in my fridge…but after that, i may have to start trying a little harder to get to #30.

30 vegetables update

day #4: dinner was vegetable red curry from my neighborhood take out thai restaurant, and included 14. cauliflower, 15. snow peas, and 16. bamboo shoots (i had to google whether that's a vegetable.  it appears to count).

day #5: i went over to a friend's house for her birthday dinner, which was potluck.  people brought such delicious food!  i brought kale salad…there were veggie samosas…two chicken dishes (of which i didn't partake)…and a chickpea and 17. sweet potato curry with naan…then chocolate cupcakes for dessert.  delish!  and great company - it was a fun group of people to spend the evening with.

30 vegetables update

day #1: my dinner was a burrito with lots of veggies and beans and 11. corn in it.  roasted corn in a burrito is the best thing ever!

day #2: one new vegetable to add to the list - 12. peas in my mutter paneer for dinner.  i tried a new indian restaurant and found it just okay…the search continues for the perfect indian take out in my neighborhood!

day #3: dinner was pasta salad with feta cheese and veggies in it, including one of my favorites: 13. broccoli.  (i'm omitting tomatoes from this 30 vegetable challenge because maybe they're a fruit, huh?)

30 vegetables in 30 days

on the radio this morning - when NPR switches to local programming for a couple minutes an hour - there was a story about an initiative in houston that is encouraging people to try to eat 30 different kinds of vegetables in 30 days.  this sounds like my kind of challenge!  here i go.

day 1:
today for lunch i had an asian salad from whole foods that had the following in it:
1. red peppers
2. zucchini (this is clutch, because i really don't like zucchini, but it was chopped up super small in this salad and thus it was acceptable)
3. cabbage
4. onions
5. kale
and chickpeas and cilantro, but i don't think those count.  unless - cilantro?  is that a vegetable?  what's the difference between a vegetable and an herb?

also had some veggie spring rolls from whole foods with 6. lettuce & 7. carrots inside (plus tofu and noodles).

i eat a lot of vegetables, but i'm pretty sure i don't have 30 different vegetables in my repertoire.  i guess we have 29 more days to find out!

[updated: i forgot!  i had an omelet this morning with 8. asparagus and 9. spinach in it, with some 10. potatoes on the side.  i am totally counting the potatoes even though they are a pretty starchy and not-good-for-you vegetable.]

a photo a day

i'm sorry to every other sandwich i've ever eaten: this one is my lifetime favorite.  truffled egg salad on a pretzel bun from local foods - INCREDIBLE.  how did i live in houston for six months before going here?  and when can i go back?

spring rolls

i made spring rolls!  my friends dominique and justin showed me how to make them this year in new york, and i wanted to make them again - they're delicious and so easy.  i found the wrappers at the fancy grocery store nearby that has a great asian food aisle...

i filled them with udon noodles (i guess you're supposed to use skinnier noodles, but this is what i had in my pantry), cabbage, carrots, basil, and tofu...

and then did a bad, but edible, job rolling them up.  i dipped them in a peanut sauce i found in the same grocery aisle.  delicious!  i'll be doing this again soon.

4th of july cupcakes!

happy 4th of july!  this is my first 4th of july in the united states since 2008, since i've spent the past four summers in england.  i was a little worried about not having anyone to celebrate with, since i'm so new to houston and don't have many friends yet, but my atlanta friend christy is in town visiting her sister and we're going to hang out.  hooray!

i made cupcakes to bring along to the fireworks watching.  i got the idea that i wanted to make red velvet cupcakes because then you can have cream cheese frosting and that is obviously a good thing.  the smitten kitchen cookbook has a recipe for red wine velvet cake, where you use red wine instead of red food coloring.  woah.  i needed to try this.

using my new kitchenaid mixer - thanks, becky and brandon!  i love it.

cupcakes!  (you can also see my sparkly 4th of july fingernail polish.)

the cupcakes turned out denser than i'd hoped...good flavor, but not the best cupcake of my life.  they're not bad, though...so into tupperwares they go, and off to celebrate the holiday!

what i've been eating

i LOVE having my own kitchen again...which you've probably noticed from the number of food-related posts over the past three weeks.  i love everything about it: shopping, planning, the cooking itself.  being able to cook again + not having many friends (yet) in my new city = i haven't visited many houston restaurants yet, so i'm relying on a lot of recommendations as i plan where i'll go with my visitors this weekend.

yesterday i made this potato salad and it was wonderful.  no mayo, just a mustardy-vinegarette over it, which made it light and summery.  and lots of veggies (snap peas and asparagus) were mixed in so it felt more like a salad salad than a potato salad.  yummmm.  i ate up the leftovers as quickly as possible.

today i made pizza dough using the recipe from the cooking class i took in new york this spring.  i topped it with crushed tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, parmesan cheese, caramelized onions, and sauteed mushrooms.  it was OUT OF THIS WORLD.  if i could only eat one food for the rest of my life, this would be it.

let me also say there is no more perfect dessert than blackberries and peaches sprinkled with a tiny bit of sugar and allowed to get juicy.  YUM.

um, people.  there is a great farmer's market a couple blocks from my apartment!!!

(it would probably be a 15 minute walk from my apartment, but at the moment it is a 3 minute drive because it's far too warm to walk...)

this market is open year round on weekends in a big parking lot, and there were hundreds of people there yesterday morning.  in addition to all the normal fruits and veggies there were a few stalls selling paninis or crepes or indian street food, and there was live music and plastic chairs to sit around and listen to this music.  it's not just ANY farmer's market that's around the corner, it's a fantastic one!  i am so excited to make this a regular part of my weekends.

today i bought corn, the best tomatoes i've eaten in a LONG time, peaches, amazing blackberries, and mushrooms.

i was momentarily very confused about seeing corn in a farmer's market in mid-june.  my mom JUST planted the corn in her garden at home, and i'm used to corn being in season in august.  then i remembered that i live in texas now.  a google search led me to this on almanac.com

in houston you plan your corn in mid-march.

where i grew up you plant your corn in early june.

woah.  this is a whole new kind of south.  but i win, since it means i get many additional months of corn on the cob!

chocolate babka

a huge seinfeld fan, i love this scene, where jerry and elaine want to take a chocolate babka to a dinner party but an old lady in line in front of them gets the last one.  but as a southerner a "babka" was a foreign concept to me.  what is it?  a loaf of bread?  a dessert?  i have never known.

um, today i had some chocolate babka.  and it was IN. CRED. I. BLE.

a babka is like a huge loaf-sized croissant, filled with chocolate or cinnamon.  it is a dessert that isn't super sweet.  this is my favorite kind of pastry.

one of my professors this semester fits all my stereotypes of new yorkers.  she is jewish, wears crazy high heels every day, talks very loudly and with her hands, and is only 39 and is a super accomplished lawyer and a dean at the columbia law school.  she initially totally intimidated me and now i love her.  she has taught us to advocate for ourselves in negotiations and difficult conversations, and you can tell she cares about us as individuals and about our work as educators (her husband is the head of a jewish day school, so she understands our jobs).  today was our last class together, and she brought bagels...and chocolate babkas and cinnamon babkas.  WARM.  warm baked goods is the way into my heart.

and now this seinfeld episode makes even more sense.  a babka cannot be replaced by another item from a bakery.  a babka is worth the freak-out that jerry and elaine have when they don't think they can get one.  i am a babka convert.

a photo a day

last night i went to dinner with some friends at a restaurant far, far away from where i live (about as far as you can get and still be in manhattan), but the place is SO GOOD and SO CHEAP, and it is BYOB, so you can drink for a reasonable price.  victory all around!  it's called cafe himalaya and it serves noodles and curries and dumplings and other deliciousness.  it doesn't have its own website, which tells you something.  it is at the corner of 1st street and 1st avenue, and that appeals to me, too.  this restaurant can do no wrong.

after dinner we went to the big gay ice cream shop, and YES, THAT IS REALLY WHAT IT IS CALLED.  i have been twice, and both times i got the ice cream cone called the salty pimp, which is vanilla ice cream, caramel, sea salt, and chocolate sauce.  it is so good you would push someone into a puddle in order to get this ice cream cone.

this is me and brook with our salty pimps.  i was unable to wait for her to take this picture before forced to take two bites.  YUM.

days until i leave new york: 15.  ARGHHHHHH.  i am so sad about this.

pizza!

this week i went to my second cooking class, courtesy of my christmas present from dad!  the theme this time: making homemade pizzas.  YUM.  i experimented, pretty successfully, with homemade pizza dough in august when i was at home with my parents, but i learned a lot from this class.  for example: to make your oven EVEN hotter (the hotter the oven, the better the pizza), turn it on to 500 degrees (or as hot as it goes).  let it preheat.  then turn it to broil for 10 minutes.  then turn it back to 500 degrees and put the pizza in.  the broiler will heat it the oven up to 600 degrees (according to my teacher).  i also got some great tips on how to make super amazing dough (looooong rise/proofing time).  i can't wait to try them out when i'm in a real apartment!

we made dough first, and got to put it in a baggie and take it home with us.  mine is in my fridge now, waiting for pizza-making to happen (probably tomorrow).

then, with dough the instructor started yesterday, we made pizzas!  everyone made two, and we tasted each others' creations.  he had lots of suggestions of topping combinations (we got recipes to take home).  i made:

1. broccoli rabe, garlic oil, red pepper flakes, ricotta, and lemon (DELISH).

and 2. freshly-made red sauce, mozzarella, roasted mushrooms, and caramelized onions.  incredible.  i got big compliments on this one when i shared it around.  why am i not caramelizing onions more often?!

we also made two big salads to share - the fennel one on the right was the best.  i've never bought fennel before, but i will DEFINITELY be making this salad in the future.

another success!  i can't wait to move into an apartment in june and cook much more frequently.  [right now "cooking" is usually (a) stir frying, (b) making burritos, (c) cooking pasta, or (d) heating up frozen food.  all of this is fine in moderation...but we've moved past moderation at this point.]
