#1: oxyclean powder, mixed with water and made into a paste, can be rubbed on armpit stains on white tshirts, let to sit for 20 minutes or so, and then washed and - voila! - armpit stains gone! not "better" - gone! (i feel like an oxyclean commercial right now.) this is a trick courtesy of my sister becky, and she gets a GOLD STAR for her efforts.*
#2: i love corn chowder. (this is not a discovery from today, but this is necessary background information.) i've been wanting to make my own corn chowder, but sometimes when you make things you realize that they are not good for you, and i am in denial about corn chowder's caloric content and/or fat grams. i found this recipe today, and decided to give it a go. i only made a half recipe, using vegetable broth instead of the chicken broth, omitting the bacon, and using 2% milk instead of half-and-half. and no bread bowl - i made some biscuits to go alongside it. IT WAS AMAZING. a tiny bit sweet because of the fresh corn, and chock full of corn and onions and peppers - obviously the best part. it feels healthy...enough. i would really recommend trying it!
*a lot of times in class i will ask a particularly tough question and tell my students, "i will be so excited if someone gets this right!" if someone does, i award an imaginary gold star to them. (you might not be surprised to know that my class is a mixture of fun facts, positive reinforcement, and real world applications.) the other day i was on the phone with someone who said (i am not joking), "of all the people i work with, you get a gold star for being the most prompt." we were immediately best friends, as she knows the value of an imaginary gold star. and people? i was feeling good all day after she said that to me. these imaginary gold stars work!!
