overheard last night while volunteering:
"there are a lot of people at el azteca* tonight because it's cinco de mario or something."
yes, yes - the fifth of mario was yesterday. my friends and i accidentally went somewhere hip to celebrate when all we wanted were some cold coronas. our local mexican restaurant (el azteca) was overrun by people because a radio station was having a party (?) there to celebrate this holiday-that-has-turned-into-an-excuse-for-americans-to-drink. we arrived just before the huge crowds came as they got off work at 5pm; when we left at 5:30 THERE WERE POLICEMEN DIRECTING TRAFFIC IN AND OUT OF THE RESTAURANT PARKING LOT. i was like, seriously? this "holiday" is ridiculous.
