book club with claire

last week i finished reading city of thieves, by david benioff and it was SO GOOD...the kind of good where you know you'll read it again.  in fact, i almost started again from the beginning when i finished the last page.  that good.  i love it when authors can tell a simple story and tell it well.  i don't need a million characters or fast-paced events - i just need a good plot.  and i loved this one.

city of thieves - success!
suite francaise, by irene nemirovsky - failure.  i could not get into this book.  50 pages in and i couldn't do it any more.  i wanted to like it, because of the circumstances of its writing and rediscovery 60 years later, but i couldn't make myself.  so i stopped trying.  don't judge.

  1. What is the premise of City of Thieves? I know I can look it up, but I'm thinking your response will be better :) I need books to read this summer on my travels-- any other recommendations? xoxo

  2. city of thieves: a soldier who has potentially deserted his unit + a 17 year old boy who is arrested for being out past curfew are put in the same prison cell in leningrad during world war 2. the punishment for each of their crimes is death. the general (or whatever) in the army brings the two of them to him and tells them that they can go free if they bring back 12 eggs for the general's daughter's wedding cake - her wedding is in a week. people in leningrad are starving to death - there is little chance they will find the eggs. but the two of them set off together to look for the eggs. stuff happens. it is funny and sad and interesting.

you definitely need to read it! it would be the perfect book for you while you're traveling (where are you going, by the way??). xoxo
